TableTop Therapies is a nonprofit organization looking to offer youths in detention centers and group homes therapy through the use of tabletop role-playing games.
The juvenile justice system has a history of dehumanizing the children that go through it. Many of them come from backgrounds that foster violence, anger, retaliation, and lack of self-discipline. Simply being let out of the system and put back into those environments, they return to the same behavioral patterns that put them in the juvenile justice system. After all, those are the only survival skills they ever learned, and they return to the one place they needed them to survive.
TableTop Therapies seeks to intervene and break the cycle by teaching youth in the juvenile justice system the social skills necessary to function outside of their home environment. Role-play therapy is a proven strategy that helps unlearn maladaptive behavioral patterns. Role-playing game systems simulate the environments needed to learn the skills to properly reintegrate into society. These games give the players engaging and dynamic situations that allow them to make decisions and feel a sense of reward without having the high risk, social pressures, and anxiety they experience in the real world, creating a comfortable and safe environment for them to fully engage with the therapeutic sessions.
